Delegate Kory's Letter to the Editor Regarding the Proposed Fairfax Charter School
Kaye's published letter to the editor is in response to the Post column, "Is Fairfax charter school an impossible dream?", written by Jay Mathews regarding the proposed charter school in Fairfax County:
There's hope for a Fairfax Charter School
I think, but I am not sure, that Jay Mathews admires Eric Welch as an educational innovator who has developed a potentially game-changing plan for a charter school in Fairfax County [“Fairfax charter school an impossible dream?,” Metro, Oct. 6]. I think, but I am not sure, that he assumes the county School Board will oppose Mr. Welch’s proposal for the Fairfax Leadership Academy (FLA), with a mission to create an alternative educational model to meet the needs of economically and ethnically diverse communities inside the Beltway. Or maybe not.
What I do know is that Mr. Mathews’s attempt at humor inadvertently deflected attention from the development effort by Mr. Welch and his team and shifted the focus to board members and administrators who “don’t like charter schools because they might make public schools look bad.” This statement trivializes a complex issue.
The FLA proposal is well-researched, well-written, thorough and practical. It has been praised by members of the State Board of Education and the Fairfax school board who have reviewed advance drafts. The obstacles that remain are logistical (e.g., parking at the site), not educational.
